For now the youngsters presented two cars - the Golf GTI Aurora and the Golf Estate FighteR - and both claim to be “fast, loud, spectacular and digital”.

Golf GTI Aurora

18 students from the Wolfsburg HQ worked their magic on the Golf GTI Aurora, which is powered by a 279kW version of Volkswagen’s familiar 2-litre turbopetrol engine.

Painted in Nardo Grey and Deep Black Pearl Effect, the one-off concept is told apart by a unique body kit, rear diffuser and all decorative elements were painted by hand.

The Aurora is also fitted with a 3500 watt sound system and has additional displays in the centre console that show engine and other vehicle data deemed relevant for track days, while the front passenger can also get in on the action using a linked tablet device.

“By taking part in the Golf GTI Wörthersee project, our apprentices gain wide-ranging and indeed interdisciplinary technical experience for their later careers,” said VW’s Director of Vocational Training, Christoph Görtz.

“The integration of complex digital applications in the vehicle is of utmost importance, as are keeping to a schedule and maintaining quality standards, coordinating with the specialists involved, presenting their results and finding creative solutions to technical challenges.”

Golf Estate R FighteR

But the Aurora was not without competition from the students in Saxony, who revealed the Golf Estate R FighteR. Created by thirteen youngsters, the FighteR is powered by a 295kW version of VW’s 2-litre TSI and has the added benefit of all-wheel-drive, given that it’s based on the Golf R.

Although the body kit remains on the subtle side, this manic wagon has been widened by 3cm on each side, and there is added glamour in the form of a glossy paint job featuring a combination of Crystal Silver, Nardo Grey, Misano Red and Piano black, as well as front strobe lights in the grille and a rooftop light system.

Up on the roof you’ll also find a 360 degree camera, which was used to record a hot lap on the Sachsenring, which showgoers will be able to view in the vehicle with VR glasses.

Cabin appointments include leather and Alcantara trim that extends all the way to the luggage compartment, as well as red decorative stitching.

ABT gives Golf R more bite, bark and poise

Kempten, Germany - German tuner ABT Sportsline has worked its magic on the latest Volkswagen Golf R and while it isn’t the most powerful conversion out there, it does seem to have the makings of a reliable package with all the extras you’d want from a hot hatch. SoLarMovies First things first, an ABT Power Software engine control unit increases the maximum outputs from 228kW and 400Nm to 257kW and 440Nm. As this is an auxiliary unit, the original ECU remains untouched and the vehicle is completely diagnosable. No performance figures have been supplied, but expect a slight improvement over the standard Golf R’s 4.6 second 0-100km/h sprint time. You’ll also want to add ABT’s distinctive muffler system with four dark chrome-plated, 102mm tail pipes that are said to deliver an enticing soundtrack. There is more to this package than just power and sound - the ABT Golf R can be ordered with a height-adjustable suspension kit with ABT performance springs and ABT sport anti-roll bar k...

Joburg tuner RGM unleashes 945kW Mustang LATEST LAUNCHES / 10 MAY 2019, 1:50PM / MOTORING STAFF Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on LinkedInTell a Friend 1 2 3 4 Johannesburg - “I want a street-legal car that can get into the nine-second bracket over a quarter-mile, and if necessary be driven home afterwards.” That’s what the owner of a Ford Mustang GT wanted and that’s the challenge that Joburg-based tuner RG Motorsport happily rose to. The result: a heavily modified 5.4-litre supercharged V8 engine that pushes out 945kW and 1100Nm, and that’s with a 7500rpm limit imposed until the motor is fully run in. Once loosened up, the engine will happily scream to 8200rpm. As you would expect, some serious tinkering took place beneath this Mustang’s hood. For starters, there’s a 2.9-litre Whipple supercharger with Stage 3 Competition Kit and integrated intercooler. Max boost is currently set at 1.25 Bar, while the compression ratio is set at 9.8:1. RG also installed a stroker crankshaft with an ATI damper pulley, a Boundary Racing oil pump, Eagle con rods, Cometic head gaskets, PAC valve springs, Ferrea valves and Comp Cams camshafts. Pumping the petrol is three-stage Fore fuel system with triple pumps and Injector Dynamics 1700cc injectors. Of course, a top-notch engine management system is also in order here and that comes in the form of two specially-formulated Lund Racing maps, one for normal pump fuel and another designed for a 95 percent ethanol mix on the dragstrip. For those max-horsepower moments there’s also water-methanol and nitrous injection systems. The final garnish is a 76mm Techniflow dual-tone outlet system with ceramic-coated manifolds. But how does it put all that power to the road? While the basic six-speed automatic gearbox remains, it benefits from the substitution of various key items. A Circle D 245mm torque convertor takes the place of the standard one and an uprated input shaft has been added. Further back you’ll find a carbon fibre prop shaft (rated to 1490kW) as well as a new differential with a Torsen limited slip mechanism and a shorter – 3.7:1 versus 3.5:1 – Ford Performance crownwheel and pinion. The final piece of the power delivery puzzle is a set of Driveshaft Shop half-shafts, also rated just shy of 1500kW! Handling is beefed up by Stop The Hop hardware on the rear axle, a roll centre/bumpsteer correction kit on the front and adjustable anti-roll bars at both ends. Dampers have been uprated with a KW Variant 3 coilover kit. Stopping force is looked after by 10-piston Vari calipers and matched discs upfront, but the back brakes are unchanged due to the necessity of running 17-inch rear wheels on the drag strip, where a parachute will no doubt be required. When living life by the quarter mile, the Mustang will be fitted with 17-inch slicks as well as a six-point rollcage. But when it’s time to hit the road, those aforementioned rims will be swopped out for 22-inch alloys shod with 285/25 and 245/30 front and rear tyres.
